The Social Media Compliance Council (SMCC) was assembled to develop a structured path forward for regulated companies within the social media ecosystem. SMCC members represent enterprise-wide departments within regulated industries such as BioPharmaceutical/Medical Device, Healthcare, Financial Services, Consumer Goods, Telecommunications and other industries. As a multi-disciplinary organization, the SMCC’s mandate is to enable companies to embrace the value of social media for internal and external collaboration among employees, service providers, customers and other stakeholders.
Social media creates value for all industries, however, regulated industries have been slow to benefit from the media. The SMCC contends that social media:
- Is an evolving channel of communication that compliments existing mechanisms
- Can be leveraged by regulated companies to improve appropriate product use and promotion for benefit of both companies and consumers
- Engagement of the consumer via social media will improve outcomes
